In 2010, for the first time, we took the collective pulse of our workforce. We wanted a better sense of whether our culture was empowering employees and motivating them to do their best. Completed by 82% of our workforce, the Employee Engagement Survey indicated a job satisfaction rate of 74%. Our people told us that the key drivers of job satisfaction were the opportunity for career advancement and leadership, along with IAMGOLD's commitment to excellence in sustainability practices. As Senior Vice President, Human Resources, the results of the survey were personally gratifying.

The focus of our human resources strategy is to attract, develop and retain the best people for a growing and diverse organization. As we seek to build a pipeline of talent for our global operations, we are up against a "war on talent" that is becoming more challenging with an aging workforce. The best people want to work for the best companies. We need to be perceived as the employer of choice, and we are succeeding. When we ask employees what attracted them to IAMGOLD, they tell us it was the competitive compensation, a performance-based reward system, the opportunity for career progression and corporate values that align with personal values. Our success at attracting and retaining the best talent reflects an enticing value proposition.

IAMGOLD has more than 5,000 employees who are engaged, committed and accountable. We have worked hard to build a performance-based culture that facilitates personal growth, teamwork, continuous improvement and innovation. Our diligent performance management process is designed to help employees excel. We provide opportunities for career progression and the optimization of individual talents. Many of our employees benefit from mentoring programs, job exchanges and special project management assignments. These initiatives often reveal hidden leadership talent within the organization. Recognizing and developing leadership capabilities in our employees is critical to succession planning. This, together with our relationships with universities and mining schools all over the world, ensures that we have access to the talent necessary to build the leadership "bench strength" for tomorrow.

We have great people. They are hard working and committed to IAMGOLD. Our commitment to them is to continue evolving a culture that supports empowerment and inspires innovation. Satisfied employees are productive employees. Their goals are aligned with corporate goals. And when employees are not just working for you, but are working with you to achieve the corporate goals, then you have the bench strength to drive superior performance.
